Many historians reckon this helped protect the monks and their precious manuscripts when danger approached by scrambling up and pulling the ladder behind them. However – SHOCK ALERT! Invading Vikings also knew how to lit fires and could easily smoke the terrified monks out. The real reason the doorway is located high from the ground is that the tower required foundations which the stonemasons did not dig down to create, they simply began building at ground level.

Around the monastic settlement, protected by the sanctuary of the ancient High Cross, are remains of churches, stone crosses, graveyards, and ancient pathways that have welcomed pilgrims for centuries. Each ruin tells a story of faith, resilience, and community. Although Viking attacks, fires, and the passage of time changed Glendalough forever, the spirit of this sacred valley remains remarkably intact.
